The reason for this is that "Time" as a concept is peculiar to our Earth Plane reality. In the vaster reality in which we are nested, there is no time--at least not as we conceive of it here. There, we live in an "eternal now" and we are more fully aware of our past and future--in terms of our "probable" pasts and futures. But we live in a powerful "nowness"--not only there, but here too.
Seth, as channeled by Jane Roberts introduced the idea of "probable selves " and "probable lifetimes" (reincarnation). And in any discussion of probable selves and lives it should be borne in mind that we are whole. There is no need to feel overwhelmed by the staggering complexity that considering this phenomneon one might suggest. Beyond the complexity is an Intelligence which has it all organized and orchestrated in the most astoundingly beautiful way. We are a part of that Intelligence. Right now we, on Earth, are focused in a small part of our consciousness-- one small state of our being which is a part of the vaster whole. Sometimes I call this a "left brain state." It has limitations, which, if used in concordance with a right brain state, can be fun to explore with. However, this perspective, as it is used now--excluding the right brain--is dangerous. The left has tried to co-opt the powers abilities and responsibilities of the right and it has mucked itself up magnificently.
Thus for the left-brain to try to comprehend things such as probable selves and lives or the perfection of profound paradox and Oneness, is simply beyond it. One neeeds to move to a right brain state. This can be done through trance, meditation, sincere and receptive prayer, art, dance, music, playfulness, Nature and other ways. From that right brain state one can begin to get to know vaster parts of the Self that are perfectly comfortable with all of those concepts that stagger the left brain and frighten it.
We all have an Inner Being who is our vaster wiser more loving Self--our eternal Self. That Self contains all of its "reincarnational" probable selves. It is similar to us in our bodies. We have many distinguishable parts--organs and physical systems-- and each of those, plus each cell within them has its own self-awareness...its own consciousness...but is also aware of the vaster self it is a part of--the part we call "me" or "I." We try to do all we can to keep all parts of ourselves healthy and happy.
Just so, we each have an Inner Being--who lives in a vaster state that belongs to us as well. It is a state and Self we can learn to focus into. Our Inner Being is fully aware of us and is constantly offering help to us to make the best choices for our happiest life. However, they speak softly and they allow us whatever individuality and freedom we wish to have. They are never pushy or forcing. We are allowed to have "good ideas"-- as Shakti Gawain calls them--which are in fact not in alignment with the optimal path our Inner Being can see. That part of the self can see Truth, which is God. Our Inner Being listens constantly to the voice of Her Divine Inner Self at the center of our being--just as we are meant to listen to our Inner Being. That Divine core self IS Truth.
Our God Self speaks through our Inner Being to us in the language of feelings. So it behooves to listen to our core feelings--our deepest emotional truth. For that is our guidance towards our optimal path and happiness.
The "good ideas" come from our intellect, our rational mind, which is greatly influenced by the beliefs that are popular in the culture of the historical time we are focues in i that life. For example: saying the word "sex" (as in sexual intercourse) at one point in human history might have been considered, to be outlandish and offensive. If the word was said in polite company it might elicit feelings of embarrassment, shame, anger or salaciousness in the hearers. However, in another time and culture, the word, having a more positive connotation, might elicit only feelings of pleasure. The latter is closer to how our Inner Beings wants to experience the phenomenon through us--at least in its more pure forms.
However, if, for example, if a woman has a traumatic past associated with sex, and she meets a man who innocently wants to have sex with her, her Inner Being might send her feelings of fear or a wish to avoid him...just because she is not yet ready to enjoy the experience. Those types of feelings of aversion can come from Inner Being as well.
Therefore, this is all about choices. Do we listen to and follow our natural, Inner Being-inspired feelings? Or do we listen to our cultural, intellectually-constructed beliefs and their precipitate feelings? Or do we listen to our "good ideas" that sound and feel great to us...but which we haven't checked on with our Inner Being?
Personally I still get confused about the difference between some "good ideas" and true inspiration. But, it's all part of my ever growing refinement towards vibrational alignment with my Inner Being.
But back to choices. The path our life takes is all about choices...and some are better than others...in terms of creating the result we desire. However, our Inner Being creates a probable self to follow each path we are considering. So in a wonderful way we can "have our cake and eat it too."
[Caveat--this next part needs at least a nod toward the right brain's power to understand vast concepts.]
There are unlimited realities peopled with these probable selves. And apparently our Inner Being can choose different times and places on Earth for the explorations of these selves. This we call "reincarnation." However, being time-oriented we think that these other selves either don't exist, or exist in a past that is set in stone. But Seth says that the past --like the future--is malleable as well. However, my own Inner Being warns me that interfering with past lives can have unfortunate or serious results. They are still "living" and evolving. We need to respect their individuality and choices. However, there is a way to consider and study our other lives safely.
We can identify major choice points and imagine what more efficacious paths forward were available in that life. We can follow the alternative choices and see where they lead. We are allowed to imagine that we are "repatterning" that other life for the better, but it is more respectful just bring the lesson into this life and use it well. Leave the past life respectfully alone.
Denise Linn, author of Past Lives, Present Dreams: How to Use Reincarnation for Personal Growth, gives a method of "repatterning" past lives, as she calls it. It is an excellent book and highly recommend it, but I would just keep the above caveat in mind if you want to do a "repatterning."
,Joyce Kilmartin. says the following about "probable selves:"
"So what are probable selves? Seth (Jane Roberts) says that each probable self is a portion of your soul, which comprises many, many probable versions in our physical reality system, as well as many more versions in the reincarnational system. Every time we reach a choice-point, that is a moment where we are about to make a decision that will move our lives in a different direction–a probable self will spin off to follow 'the path not taken.' "
Thus, the terminology is important, but beyond the words there is available a deeper understanding from one's Inner Being. That is a very important arrow to add to one's quiver before exploring other life times. Always take your Inner Being with you, wherever and whatever you are exploring. Just turn inward and ask them. They will comply.
